At the age of 21, Hawking was diagnosed with amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS, or Lou Gehrig’s disease). In a very simple sense, the nerves that controlled his muscles were shutting down. At the time, doctors gave him two and a half years to live. On March 14, 2018, Hawking died of ALS, the disease that was supposed to have killed him more than 50 years earlier. [ 2]

His publications include the best sellers A Brief History of Time: From the Big Bang to Black Holes (1988), The Universe in a Nutshell (2001), A Briefer History of Time (2005), and The Grand Design (2010; coauthored with Leonard Mlodinow).

Stephen Hawking was well known for his work with black holes and relativity, and the author of popular science books like A Brief History of Time. When Hawking first published this book, he had no idea it would become a best seller. The book has sold over 10 million copies and spent more than 5 years on the London Sunday Times bestseller list. Many people find the universe confusing — it’s not.

Stephen Hawking

Even if there is only one possible unified theory, it is just a set of rules and equations. What is it that breathes fire into the equations and makes a universe for them to describe? The usual approach of science of constructing a mathematical model cannot answer the questions of why there should be a universe for the model to describe. Why does the universe go to all the bother of existing?

Stephen Hawking

Science can lift people out of poverty and cure disease. That, in turn, will reduce civil unrest.

Stephen Hawking

It surprises me how disinterested we are today about things like physics, space, the universe and philosophy of our existence, our purpose, our final destination. Its a crazy world out there. Be curious.

Stephen Hawking

Scientists have become the bearers of the torch of discovery in our quest for knowledge.

Stephen Hawking

Remember to look up at the stars and not down at your feet. Try to make sense of what you see and wonder about what makes the universe exist. Be curious. And however difficult life may seem, there is always something you can do and succeed at. It matters that you don’t just give up.

Stephen Hawking

God is the name people give to the reason we are here.

Stephen Hawking

The past, like the future, is indefinite and exists only as a spectrum of possibilities.

I believe the simplest explanation is, there is no God. No one created the universe and no one directs our fate. This leads me to a profound realization that there probably is no heaven and no afterlife either. We have this one life to appreciate the grand design of the universe and for that, I am extremely grateful.

Stephen Hawking

There is nothing bigger or older than the universe.

Stephen Hawking

One of the basic rules of the universe is that nothing is perfect. Perfection simply doesn’t exist…..Without imperfection, neither you nor I would exist

Stephen Hawking

If aliens visit us, the outcome would be much as when Columbus landed in America, which didn’t turn out well for the Native Americans. We only have to look at ourselves to see how intelligent life might develop into something we wouldn’t want to meet.

Stephen Hawking

The universe doesn’t allow perfection.
